Kaiser Permanente
The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research has a nearly 50-year history of successful collaboration
with other research organizations and acts as a key member of the HMO Research Network, a consortium of 15 health
maintenance organizations that uses its collective scientific capabilities to integrate research and practice for
the improvement of health and health care among diverse populations.
Dr. Andrew L. Avins, MD, MPH, is the lead co-investigator of the BOLD Project at Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Avins
is a research scientist at the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California; he holds appointments in
the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco, where he
remains active in the clinical and teaching programs. Dr. Avins is a board-certified general internist. His research
interests include musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases, preventive medicine (with an emphasis on screening and
treatment policies), complementary and alternative medicine (with an emphasis on clinical trials of alternative
therapies), and research methodologies.
